How Custom Amish Furniture Is Made
Learn how custom Amish furniture is made, from selecting wood species and finishes to handcrafted construction and delivery.
Choose Your Collection and Pieces
Every custom furniture project starts with finding the style that fits your home. At Amish Exclusive, you can browse over 260 collections across bedroom, dining, and living room categories.
Each collection represents a distinct design language: from the clean lines of Shaker-inspired pieces to the bold character of rustic farmhouse styles to the refined elegance of transitional designs. Within each collection, you'll find coordinating pieces so your room feels cohesive.
What to bring to the showroom:
- Photos of your room
- Room measurements
- Any inspiration images you've saved
Not sure what you want? That's completely normal. Most customers refine their choices over one or two showroom visits. There's no pressure.
Select Wood Species and Finish
Once you've chosen your pieces, the real customization begins. You'll select from six premium hardwood species:
Oak
Classic, durable
Cherry
Elegant, darkens with age
Maple
Hardest, contemporary
Walnut
Rich natural dark
Hickory
Bold grain, toughest
Brown Maple
Warm mid-tone
After choosing your wood, you'll pick a stain color from dozens of options. Stain samples are available in our showroom on actual wood, not just on color cards. The same stain looks completely different on oak versus maple versus cherry. Seeing it on real wood is the only way to know what you're getting.
You can also choose a natural (unstained) finish to let the wood's true color show through. Especially popular with walnut and cherry, where owners want to watch the color deepen over the years.
Typical Timeline
Most custom pieces take 8-12 weeks from order to delivery. Simple modifications like stain changes may be faster. Complex custom builds may take the full 12 weeks.

Customize Dimensions and Details
This is where custom Amish furniture separates itself from big-box stores. Nearly every dimension can be modified to fit your exact space.
Need a dining table that's 68" instead of 72"? Done. A dresser 3" narrower to fit between windows? No problem. A hutch shorter for a low ceiling? Simple modification.
Custom sizing means your furniture fits like it was designed for your room. Because it was.
Beyond dimensions, you control the details:
- ✓Hardware: oil-rubbed bronze, brushed nickel, matte black, antique copper
- ✓Drawer configuration: more small drawers for organization, fewer large drawers for bulk, or a mix
- ✓Door styles: flat panel, raised panel, glass inserts, or open shelving
- ✓Special requests: built-in charging stations, hidden jewelry drawers, custom TV openings
Every piece is built individually, so there's no assembly line to disrupt. The Amish craftsmen can accommodate requests that factory furniture simply cannot.
Handcrafted Construction
After your order is placed, your piece enters the workshop queue. Most custom furniture takes 8-12 weeks from order to completion. Simple modifications fall on the shorter end; complex custom builds may take the full 12 weeks.
During those weeks, your furniture is being built by a single Amish craftsman or a small team. No assembly lines, no automated cutting machines, no rushed schedules. Each piece receives individual attention from start to finish.
Lumber Selection
Kiln-dried solid hardwood is inspected for grain quality, color consistency, and structural soundness.
Joinery & Assembly
Mortise-and-tenon joints for frames, dovetail joints for drawers, and wooden pegs for reinforcement. The same techniques used in furniture still standing after centuries.
Finish & Quality Checks
Stain hand-applied in multiple coats with sanding between each. Protective topcoat (catalyzed lacquer or conversion varnish) goes on in multiple layers, each cured and inspected.
The result is furniture built to a standard that mass production cannot match.
Delivery and Setup
When your furniture is complete, we coordinate delivery at a time that works for your schedule. Amish Exclusive provides white-glove delivery throughout the greater Rochester area, including Webster, Penfield, Pittsford, Victor, Fairport, Brighton, and Henrietta.
